Today, May 27. 2015 is NATIONAL SUNSCREEN DAY! It lands on the first sunny day we've had in weeks, coincidence?
The sun is fun, but too much sun exposure can be damaging. Annually, more than 1 million people in the United States alone are diagnosed with skin cancer, making it the most common form of cancer in our country. However, with the right protection regime, it is largely preventable.
" While using sunscreen does not make it safe to spend lengthy time in the sun, it does offer protection from sunburns when applied 20 minutes before going into the sun, and reapplied once every 2 hours- more often is you are swimming or perspiring, " suggests Heather Foster, esthetician at our Lemongrass Salon & Spa on Camp Bowie Boulevard. Other easy precautions include seeking shade when possible, wearing protective clothing and minimizing your sun exposure during 11 am and 2 pm, which are peak exposure hours for our area. Make sure you are using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, with a minimum of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15, it is also highly recommended. These precautions should be followed on sunny, but also cloudy days, all summer long. UV rays from the sun can penetrate through thin clouds, so sun exposure is very possible on overcast days.
" Protect your body from the sun, but don't forget your face," advises Vanessa Varela, esthetician of Lemongrass Salon & Spa on Overton Ridge. " AVEDA Tinted Moisturizer is a simple go-to if you're wanting a 2 in 1 product for light coverage and sun protection this summer." Formulated with minerals and without parabens, tinted moisturizers are non-acneagenic, meaning they do not cause breakouts, and are available in a range of shades, all containing SPF 15.
